8 Key Factors to Help You Choose the Best Deck Material

Find what works best for you, your family and location.

1. Deck Location

5. Surface Temperature

Which includes exposure to sun, moisture and insects. Is your deck at the beach? Surrounded by tall trees?

2. Durability

One of those things that becomes more important with time. Look for materials that resist fading, insects, rot, splitting or twisting, and more.

3. Maintenance

A dealbreaker for most people.  If cleaning and resealing your deck every year isn’t your idea of fun, look for a low-maintenance material.

4. Replacement

6. Apperance

Who wants an ugly deck? Look for a material that matches the look you want in terms of color, grain, knots, board width and more.

7. Ease of Installation

May feel like it’s only important if you install the deck yourself. But your cost of professional installation will also be higher with some materials than others.

8. Sustainability

If your deck gets direct sunlight and you want to be able to walk across it with bare feet, make sure the material you choose doesn’t get too hot.

Important if you need to replace a board someday. How easy will it be to find a match?

We all know that we can make choices that help the world, and now there are more options than ever before to have a positive impact.

Luna Wood

Lunawood-Thermowood-Honka-Huomen-Decking_detail.jpg

Finish Lunawood Thermowood is a beautiful wood material that is made by using only heat and steam. The thermal modification makes the Nordic wood dimensionally stable and weatherproof completely without chemicals.

These unique features inspire architects and designers to create stunning projects around the world. Lunawood products can be used in facades, interiors and landscaping in all climatic conditions.

If left untreated, Thermowood will gradually turn grey over time. Sun, humidity, shadow and other surrounding conditions determine how quickly the wood will grey. Note that Thermowood is a natural wood product, which may have hairline cracks due to the weather, but this does not affect the product’s durability.

IPE wood

IPE IMAGE CIRLE.jpg

Advantage IPE (pronounced EE-pay) is the finest-quality hardwood available. From the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk to your own backyard, Ipe decking is proven to keep its integrity and last longer than any other decking material.

Ipe is naturally resistant to rot and is over 8 times harder than traditional redwood. These natural qualities mean an Ipe deck can last 75+ years without constant staining or refinishing.

Ipe decking is responsibly harvested from managed forests to provide a truly renewable resource. For added peace of mind, Ipe also features up to a class A rating for flame spread, making it a great option for homes in dry brush areas, rooftops, and other fire-prone areas.

Accoya wood

wood number 4.jpg

Accoya decking resists rot and major cracks. Even extreme climates and heavy wear and tear won’t harm the wooden decking. Accoya decks will last for decades and are guaranteed with a warranty. Thanks to their high durability, decking boards made from Accoya wood are very resistant and rarely need repairs. Regular repainting or oiling is also not required. Accoya decking should be cleaned regularly with water and a brush.

The long-term beautiful appearance is due to the natural weathering that occurs. The influence of sun and rain creates a beautiful silvery-gray patina,  The picture shows a naturally grayed Accoya wooden deck after four years. Accoya is made using sustainably sourced FSC® timber. It’s 100% non toxic, 100% recyclable and has the lowest carbon lifecycle footprint of any decking material.

Heat build-up can be a significant problem on patios and decks. In summer, decking boards warm up in the sun. Some materials heat up so much that they become too hot to walk on barefoot. Tests with thermogram images showed that Accoya decks stay pleasantly cool, even on the hottest days. Accoya performed significantly better than comparable decking materials.
